Little Star English School

Little Star English Boarding School represents a new hope for the children of Lamjung and Tanahun; these districts are made up of numerous remote villages located in a beautiful valley nearly 200 km northwest of Kathmandu. This region is home to approximately ten thousand people consisting of mostly poor, ethnic minorities, and lower caste families. The people that remain in these villages in general are quite poor; as anyone with money has already migrated to the cities for better job opportunities. Through globalization, the introduction of electricity is slowly bringing radio and television to these previously isolated areas. As a result, people are beginning to see the opportunities others have and want the same for their children, shinning a new light of importance on education and creating hope for a better future for the next generation.
But how? Village children need to be able to compete for jobs with children from the cities. The only way this will be a reality is
if their English and computer skills are at the same level. Currently there is too large of a gap in education between cities and villages. Our goal is to help bridge this gap by educating not just children of villages, but specifically low caste children who may otherwise remain uneducated and trapped in a life of poverty. To do this we strive to make our school affordable to all incomes by charging the lowest fee possible. We hope to help break the stigma of the caste system and live by example, as our faculty is made up of a wide range of castes all working together for the same cause.

We proudly opened our doors on April 14th 2009 (2066/1/1). Currently we serve sixty-five students from pre-nursery level to Class Three. We hope to continue to add another class each year, ultimately including high school classes. Our faculty consists of a principal, six full-time teachers, one school assistant, as well as temporary local and foreign volunteers. The school was constructed by workers and volunteers who hand-built the seven-room school made of bamboo, bricks, mud and a tin roof.

We are very happy with the progress of our school over this opening year. Enrollment was quite high, already having over sixty students. Our teachers not only share our goals but are also educated, all having completed their bachelor degrees. We also have regular foreign volunteers which greatly strengthens our English language program. As a newly founded school that targets disadvantaged youth, we are striving for constant improvement. However as a result, finances are of course, tigh
t. While we handle our finances cautiously and responsibly, we still find that our teachers are worth more than we can currently afford and school supplies are becoming scarce. Therefore to maintain and increase our success, donations are crucial. Any help is greatly appreciated, including not only financial donations, but also basic classroom materials, first aid supplies, recreational activities, providing aid for teacher training or by directly sponsoring a child to attend our school. We also greatly encourage and welcome any visitors who want to see our village and school first-hand. With your help our dream can continue.
